Hsiao Lab Research Focus: Nanostructured Materials Guided by Patterned Light and Flow

Research in the Hsiao group is inspired by the pursuit of advanced polymeric material designs that address current global challenges in sustainability, energy, and biomedical fields. Our focus is to expand the frontiers of hierarchical polymer material designs by embedding nano-resolution into high-speed additive manufacturing, for next generation bioelectronics devices and water-separation membranes. These interdisciplinary efforts draw research expertise from advanced optics design, living radical polymerization, and non-equilibrium polymer material processing.

Hsiao Lab Research Thrusts:

Structured light illumination

Structured illumination and photochemistry provide new way to explore nano-resolution patterning. We are developing novel light guided patterning to advance additive manufacturing.

Polymer self-assembly and reaction kinetics

Self-assembly combined with reaction kinetics offer exciting opportunities to create nano-structured materials. We are exploring this design space in AM to pattern nano-resolution, hierarchical materials.

Polymer flow dynamics

Flow field is an important processing method that stretches and orients polymer molecules to have favorable mechanical and conductive properties. We are using precision flow to guide polymer molecular alignment within AM.
